Welcome to FemArc!
The association FemArc – Netzwerk archäologisch arbeitender Frauen e.V. is an organization of women, who are interested in Feminist Archaeology as well as in Women’s and Gender studies in archaeology, regardless of their training. It was founded by members of the Netzwerk archäologisch arbeitender Frauen, a loose association of female students of different archaeological disciplines that was formed in May 1991.
What we want
Our aim is to promote and to spread scientific knowledge about Women’s and Gender studies in archaeology as well as Feminist Archaeology.
Archaeology and Gender
Gender is an important category within each group, culture, social class and period of time. For understanding and describing prehistoric cultures properly one needs to examine all possible gender roles within each group. However this is not done in traditional archaeology; some academics even deny the existence of gender roles or insist that there is no possibility of identifying them in the past.
